Abia to launch Yuletide road safety campaign

As the Christmas and the New Year celebrations approach, the Abia State Government said it has mapped out strategies to ensure safety on the roads during and after
the festivities.

The state Commissioner for Transport, Chief (Mrs.) Nnenna Onwuka, disclosed this in an
interview with The Point in Umuahia, the state capital, at the end of her meeting with
stakeholders in the transport sector in the state.
“We have done beautiful jingles to put on air so that people can listen and know that whatever anybody is doing, especially during the period, life is very precious and
important,” Onwuka said. She said that the campaign would include circulation of flyers
and lectures at public places, especially motor parks and urged both transporters and commuters to ensure the success of the campaign.
Soliciting the cooperation of the law enforcement agencies and transport unions operating
in the state, the commissioner reiterated the government’s resolve to improve on the existing infrastructure in the state.
The commissioner noted with dissatisfaction the emergence of illegal motor parks across the state and relocation of transporters from the multi million Naira Ohiya Motor Park to the state capital.
The one-time transition committee chairman of Ohafia Local Government Council, said it was erroneous to say that the December period was associated with accidents without factoring in the human aspects.
