Adeleke mourns as seven commuters die in Osogbo road mishap

Seven persons have been confirmed dead in a fatal road accident that occured in Osogbo, capital of Osun State on Tuesday.

A bus and a tricycle conveying students collided at the front of WOCDIF at the Ring road area of Osogbo, causing the unfortunate loss of lives and severe injuries to some others.

About four students were said to have died in the crash.

Other casualties were children.

According to Agnes Ogungbemi, the
Public Enlightenment Officer for Sector Commander, Osun State, Federal Road Safety Commission, eight persons were involved in the accident.

She said vehicles involved included a blue Mazda bus, a yellow tricycle and a bajaj motorcycle.

Ogungbemi hinted that four male adults, two male children and one female child lost their lives in the mishap.

According to her, tyre burst, speed violation and loss of control were causes of the fatal collision.

She said one female child sustained injury in the crash that occured around 9:10am on Tuesday.

On the action taken by the road safety officials, she said, “4 died at the spot; 4 injured persons were taken to Osun State Teaching Hospital while 3 died at the hospital. The vehicles involved were taken to Dugbe Police Station. Other agency Involved are the Police and O Ambulance team.”

Meanwhile, Governor Ademola Adeleke said he is deeply hurt by the news of the death of some school students and another citizen from the fatal accident.

Responding to the incident in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke expressed deep pain at the disturbing event, conveying the heartfelt sympathy of the Government and the people of Osun state to the families of those touched by the incident.

Governor Adeleke reiterated the call on users of road to exercise caution and adhere strictly to safety guidance on roads, saying the State Government under him will work with relevant authorities to make our road more safer for road users.

While commending the state’s emergency service for the swiftness in responding to mishap as the current incident, the Governor declared the willingness of his administration to continue to pursue efforts to guide against an experience like this.

“I am distraught to hear about the terrible accident that resulted in the death of five people in Osogbo due to a fatal accident while five other people sustained injuries of varying degrees. It is really painful for me, and I want to use this avenue to commiserate with the families of the deceased.

“It is my prayer that God Almighty repose their souls and give their loved ones the fortitude to bear the irreparable losses occasioned by their death. As a government, we will give the needed support to the injured and pray for their quick recoveries,” the statement quoted the governor.
