AirForce officer beat up PHCN official for demanding N2000 bribe

An AirForce officer, who was simply identified as Johnson, has allegedly assaulted one Kemi, a member of staff of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria for disconnecting his apartment from public electricity supply and demanding N2000 bribe from him.

The incident occurred at Denro along Akute road, when Kemi and some other PHCN officials embarked on the disconnection of electricity to homes and consumers in the community.

A disagreement had occurred between the PHCN officials and the AirForce officer, who insisted that the cable disconnected from his house should not be carted away by them.

But an attempt by Kemi, who led the PHCN disconnection team, to go away with the cable supplying electricity to the AirForce officer’s apartment was said to have infuriated the man, who pounced on the woman, after the other officials of the power company, who had accompanied her to the scene, took to their heels.

The security officer was said to have beaten Kemi blue-black and dragged her on the ground, while other residents, who apparently had an axe to grind with the woman, cheered him on.

According to an eye witness, “Kemi was beaten and dragged on the floor by the AirForce man while people were cheering him. The woman (Kemi) and her men disconnected the AirForce man’s house from electricity and asked him to bribe them with N2000. But the man told them that he didn’t have such money. He told them to disconnect the light and leave his cable on the pole, while he went inside his compound.

“But before he returned, the Kemi-led team had cut the man’s wire, folded it and the woman hung it on her neck with an intention of going away with it. When the man came out and saw her with the wire on her neck, he was so annoyed and warned her to drop it, but she refused and started raining curses on the man.

“When the other PHCN officials realised who the man was, they fled and left Kemi behind. Meanwhile, Kemi insisted that she would not release the wire, even when leaders of the community appealed to her. The AirForce man later became furious and beat her blue-black, while the youths were cheering him.”

The matter was later reported at the Ojodu Abiodun Police Division.
