Akpom matches Ogbeche, Babangida feat at Ajax

Ajax Amsterdam striker Chuba Akpom was on target as back-in-form Ajax Amsterdam demolished Vitesse 5-0 at the Johan Cruyff ArenA at the weekend to climb to eighth in the Dutch Eredivisie table.

In what was his first start in the Eredivisie under Ajax Amsterdam’s new boss John van’t Schip, Akpom repaid the manager’s faith by getting on the scoresheet in the 58th minute.

Ajax’s other scorers were Jorrel Hato, Kristian Hlynsson and Kenneth Taylor, plus an own goal by Oroz.

Scoring against Vitesse meant Akpom has hit the back of the net in four consecutive matches in the Dutch top flight and equaled a feat previously achieved by two former Nigeria internationals in the process.

1996 Atlanta Olympics gold medalist Tijani Babangida scored in four consecutive Matchdays in the first four games of the 1997-1998 season as an Ajax Amsterdam player, while 2002 World Cup stars Bartholomew Ogbeche also scored in four straight Eredivisie matches for Willem II Tilburg in the 2017-2018 campaign.

Akpom’s hot form has seen him score five goals in the Eredivisie against four different teams, namely FC Volendam, Heerenveen, Almere City and Vitesse.

The Hale End Academy graduate arrived at Ajax with a huge reputation – having mustered 28 goals in 38 games in his final season at Middlesbrough to win the division’s Golden Boot and PFA Championship Players’ Player of the Year 2023.
