Ahead the 2023 general elections, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee (NWC) in a bid to meet the statutory deadline given by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for political parties to conduct their primaries, met at its Buhari House National Secretariat in Abuja but were yet to arrive on a date it would hold.

Addressing the media after the meeting which will continue, the Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, said the meeting of the NWC was to deliberate and arrive at a date the APC primaries will hold and added that they are continuing the meeting and at the end of which the party will make public its final decision.

“I want to tell you that we have started the process of deciding when and where to hold our primaries with a meeting today. We are yet to conclude and equally yet to decide when and where, but I can assure you that we are on it. As soon as we are through and have agreed on a date we will tell you and make it public to Nigerians.”

“Today the 6th of April, 2022, the NWC of the APC have met and we just rose from that meeting. Among other topics covered as you would probably expect, we discussed the program for our party’s primaries looking at the schedule of activities that is to come. I am unable to give you a run down of the details of that schedule because that is still in discussion and we are yet to conclude on a definite plan or timetable or schedule for our primaries. But I can confirm that we did have that conversation today. We begin it today. But we have not concluded or made any decision.”

The Delta State born former activist further said the party will shortly come up with a position but noted the date being reported in some newspapers and social media platforms are not from the APC NWC and should be disregarded.

“I can confirm that we have discussions. But we have not made any decision. I am not aware of anything that is trending because we have not put out any information.

“Well, we have not put up any information into the public space about the schedule of our primaries. But what I am confirming to you is that we have that discussion. And it is still in progress. And as soon as the details are concluded, and a decision is made, you will be the first to see or hear about it.”

Speaking on the controversial section of the Electoral Act which states that political appointees hoping to vie for any elective post should resign before participating in the primaries, Morka said, “The ministers are members of the party. And the party is the party. Now, both the ministers and other appointees and the party leadership have excellent counsel and guidance. I am sure everyone involved intends to comply fully with the intendment and letters of the Electoral Act.”

He could however, not confirm the amount fixed for the purchase of forms for the various positions, saying, “Very soon. I can confirm that very shortly the details and information will be made available to the public very shortly.”
