Awo’s statue: The untold story

The unveiling of the statue of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, in Ikeja, Lagos, last Tuesday came amidst pomp and ceremony but not many people know that a disgraceful scenario had been narrowly escaped.
The event was performed by the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwumi Ambode, in concert with other members of the Awolowo family, who included the wife of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
But at about two hours to the break of the day for the event, right at midnight, steaming hot asphalt-filled trucks, belonging to the Lagos Public Works Corporation, numbering about 20, bombarded the site of the statue, located at the Coca-Cola/Alausa/Allen Junction Road intersection.
It was gathered that some sycophantic civil servants had proposed to hurriedly tar the road around the statue overnight, apparently to create the impression that the roads had been smooth all the while! And perhaps to also create a pot of stew!
But it was gathered that a meteorologist informed the state government that a torrential rainfall was likely, for the period scheduled for the event, forcing the governor to halt the emergency road tarring.
And true to the forecast, it rained dogs and cats, forcing a shift in the time proposed for the event.
If the road had been tarred overnight, following which the rains poured with ‘anger’, how would vehicles have coursed the road leading to the venerated statue of Awo?
