The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Oyo, Most Rev Emmanuel Badejo has urged support for the nation’s media industry, saying this would go a long way in fostering a culture of truthful reportage in the sector.

Heade this call as the Catholic Diocese of Oyo marked the 59th World Day of Communication with a special Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Cathedral, Oyo, on Sunday.

The celebration, centred on the power of communication in fostering truth and hope, was presided over by the bishop and concelebrated by Rev. Fr. Julius Olayinka.

In his homily, Bishop Badejo emphasised the vital role of communication in daily life and faith.

He stated, “Whoever can speak is a communicator,” reminding the congregation that everyone has a responsibility to use their words wisely.

While highlighting the significance of the day, the bishop noted that this year marks the 59th World Communication Day, an annual observance established by the Catholic Church to reflect on the impact of media and interpersonal dialogue.

Badejo urged support for the media, saying, “We have to support the media and help them to say the truth.

The cleric also called on individuals to promote hope through their words.

“We should speak words of hope to each other and reflect on the kind of words we use,” he added.

He further encouraged the faithful to embrace peaceful communication, stressing the need to “use peaceful words” in interactions to foster unity and understanding.

The Bishop also charged the congregation to take the theme of the celebration to heart, applying its lessons in their families, workplaces, and communities.

After the Mass, a symposium was held where respected members of the broadcast and print media in Oyo and environs urged everyone present to avoid commercialising the truth and report fairly, spread hope, love and goodwill, deliver messages gently and also prioritise sharing positive and beneficial news.
