Some bandits reportedly stormed Gatawa, a village in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State, on Tuesday night, killing no fewer than 20 people and abducting several others.

Gatawa, an agrarian community, is considered to be one of the few secured villages in the eastern part of the state.

The attack on the village came barely 24 hours after bandits invaded Gangara, an adjoining community.

Bashir Gobir, a resident of Gatawa, said that his younger sister was among those kidnapped.

Gobir said, “The terrorists raided Gatawa yesterday night. They stole almost everything of value in the village, killed many and abducted several others. My sister, Rahila Galadima, was one of the women taken away by the bandits.”

A source described the attack as one of the most horrendous, saying, “They came on motorcycles as usual and started shooting sporadically. They went from house to house checking for food and other things but they also killed 20 people during the attack.”

The Police Public Relations Officer in Sokoto, Sanusi Abubakar, was quoted as saying that he was in a meeting and would respond later.
