Boxing: Amateur knocks out unbeaten pro in Olympic qualifier

In the biggest surprise of the APB/WSB Olympic qualification tournament in Venezuela so far, 23-year-old Colombian amateur, Juan Carlos Carrillo Palacio, knocked out unbeaten Serbian professional, Petar Maukovic (14-0, 13 KOs) in the first round of their light heavyweight preliminary.
Another professional, Massimiliano Ballisai (20-3, 12 KOs), a lightweight from Italy, was also defeated. Ballisai, who unsuccessfully challenged the European (EBU) lightweight title in March, lost in a one-sided affair to 23-year-amateur Thulasi Qatthar of Qatar. Scores were 30-26, 30-27, 30-27.
Also coming up short was 40-yearold professional Ladislav Kutil (19-4, 5 KOs), representing the Czech Republic, who was defeated handily 30-27 on all three cards by Polish amateur boxer, Mateusz Jerzy Tryc, in a light heavyweight quarterfinal matchup.
