State authorities have slammed President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, with a fine equivalent to about £78 for flouting local COVID-19 guidelines after he was spotted without a face mask at a rally in Sao Paulo, Sky News has reported.

The rally, which had thousands of motorcyclists in attendance, also witnessed President Bolsonaro addressing his supporters and reiterating his stance that the wearing of face masks was useless and pointless for those already vaccinated

The president stated that: “Whoever is against this proposal is because they don’t believe in science, because if they are vaccinated, there is no way the virus can be transmitted.”

Health experts, however, disputed the president’s claim as they insisted that the wearing of face masks shouldn’t be stopped until most people have gotten their jabs of the vaccine.

This will be his second fine in just two months as the President had in May been fined in Maranhao for the same violation of the COVID-19 law.

As at the count of June 12, 2021 the World Health Organisation (WHO) put the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country at 17,210,969 with 482,019 confirmed deaths while the country’s ministry of health says that less than 12 percent of Brazilians are yet to be administered with both doses of the vaccine.
