… denies selling property in EFCC’s custody

THE Senate, on Wednesday, confirmed Abdulrasheed Bawa as the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

With his confirmation, Bawa becomes the youngest EFCC chairman in Nigeria’s history.

He takes over from Mohammed Umar, who has been the Chairman, in an acting capacity, since June 2020, when the former Acting Chairman, Ibrahim Magu, was suspended.

The screening exercise, which commenced a few minutes after noon, was presided over by Senate President Ahmad Lawan.

There had been calls for the Federal Government to investigate an allegation that the new Chairman had been arrested and detained over the illegal sale of trucks under the former Chairman, Magu.

But the EFCC promptly denied such allegations.

Bawa, during his screening on Wednesday, also denied selling the seized property at the Commission’s Port Harcourt Zonal office, THE POINT reports.

According to him, the property was disposed off properly by EFCC officials from its headquarters.

President Muhammadu Buhari had, in a letter to the Senate, communicated the nomination of the 40-year-old for the position, saying it was in accordance with Paragraph 2(3) of Part1, CAP E1 of the EFCC Act 2004.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said Bawa is a trained EFCC investigator with vast experience in the investigation and prosecution of Advance Fee Fraud cases, official corruption, bank fraud, money laundering, and other economic crimes.

“He has undergone several specialised training in different parts of the world, and was one of the pioneer EFCC Cadet Officers in 2005. He holds a B.Sc degree in Economics, and Masters in International Affairs and Diplomacy,” he said.
