Buhari gives Adamu 2 weeks to end ASUU strike

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu to work with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, and other stakeholders to resolve the prolonged university workers’ strike within two weeks.

The education minister is expected to report back to the President in two weeks after the resolution of the crisis.

President Buhari gave Adamu the directive on Tuesday after receiving briefings from Ministries, Agencies and Departments involved in the resolution of the ongoing strike. The President had reportedly called the meeting to find out why the strike had been on for so long.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities commenced a one-month warning strike on February 14. The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, Non-Academic Staff Union of Allied and Educational Institutions and National Association of Academic Technologists also withdrew their services.

Those who attended the meeting included the Minister of Education, Adamu, Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed; Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige; Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami; Head of Service of the Federation, Folashade Yemi-Esan; Chairman, National Salaries Income and Wages Commission, Ekpo Nta; and Director-General, Budget Office, Ben Akabueze.
