President Muhammadu Buhari is scheduled to meet with the seven chairmanship aspirants of the ruling All Progressives Congress in Abuja today to ensure a peaceful convention.

APC is billed to hold its convention at the Eagles Square, Abuja, on Saturday, with seven aspirants josting for the party’s chairmanship position.

There are speculations that Senator Abdullahi Adamu, a former governor of Nasarawa State, is Buhari’s preferred candidate for the party’s number one position.

Caretaker Chairman, Mai Mala Buni, is expected to brief the APC senators today on the coming convention.

It was said that the President may have backed out of his support for Adamu in order to douse tension within the party.

Former governor Umar Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State, Malam Saliu Mustapha, Senator Sani Mohammed Musa and Mohammed Etsu of Niger State, former governor George Akume of Benue and a former chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara State, are also eyeing the plum job.

On a meeting attended by Yari, Mustapha, Al-Makura and Musa in Abuja on Tuesday, a source was reported to have said that the President, worried by the development in the party, invited the aspirants to a meeting today (Wednesday) at the Presidential Villa.

The source reportedly said that the President seize the opportunity to sell his consensus agenda to the aspirants, noting that “The aspirants have refused to step down for one another, leading to cracks among the APC governors and leaders.”
