Carpenter commits suicide over failing business, debts

A carpenter, simply identified as Abubakar, has allegedly committed suicide in the Old Ojo, Agboju area of Lagos, over his failing business and indebtedness.

Our correspondent learnt that Abubakar took his own life inside an uncompleted building by hanging himself with a rope.

Some residents of the area, who pleaded not to be identified, said that the victim had for some time, been complaining about lack of money to neighbours around his workshop.

A commercial motorcycle rider, who identified himself as Salisu, said he was shocked to hear that Abubakar had committed suicide.

“He had been complaining that he had no money and that he was owing some people. He lamented that he was not progressing since this government came to power. The other day, I had to give him N1000. I don’t really know where he was living, but he told me it was off Old Ojo Road. I don’t really know much about him, but we were casual friends. There was a day he said there was nothing in this life; that God should just take his life. He said life to him was just all about suffering. He said he even preferred to die,” Salisu said.

A resident of the area, Kunle Adegbesan, said he was shocked to hear that Abubakar decided to take his own life.

Adegbesan said that the carpenter did not appear as somebody who could take such a rash decision about his existence, because he knew him as a hardworking individual.

He said, “My brother, I don’t know why somebody would decide to take his own life. As human beings, we have to be very patient in life. You can suffer today, but enjoy tomorrow. Nigerians are always in a hurry to make it. A carpenter should not expect to make millions of naira just like that. Why should he commit suicide? Why? They said he complained of lack of money.  And he was owing certain people, and so what! Even Nigeria is owing. That is not an excuse for somebody to commit suicide.”
