CBN defers September 2023 MPC meeting

The Monetary Policy Committee of the Central Bank of Nigeria has deferred its 293rd meeting scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, September 25 and 26, 2023, respectively.

The Director, Corporate Communications of the CBN, Isa AbdulMumin, said in a statement on Thursday that a new date would be communicated.

“A new date will be communicated in due course. We regret any inconvenience this change may cause our stakeholders and the general public, AbdulMumin said.

While the CBN did not disclose the specific reasons behind the deferral, such decisions typically hinge on a range of economic and financial factors.

However, monetary experts said it is possible that the CBN’s decision could be connected to the recent announcement of new deputy governors amidst rumours that the current deputy governors were yet to resign.

Last week, President Bola Tinubu, nominated Olayemi Michael Cardoso to assume the role of Governor for the CBN.

In addition to nominating Cardoso, President Tinubu also approved the selection of four individuals to serve as Deputy Governors of the CBN.

These esteemed candidates, who will also serve a five-year term pending Senate confirmation, are: Mrs. Emem Nnana Usoro

Mr. Muhammad Sani Abdullahi Dattijo; Mr. Philip Ikeazor and Dr. Bala M. Bello.
