Occupants of a storey-building gutted by fire around Second Gate, University of Ibadan, have been thrown into confusion as they were rendered homeless following the fire incident.

Some rooms in the building, occupied by students of the university and other members of the public, were affected by the inferno.

Also affected was the roof of the building.

It was gathered that the fire, which started from one of the rooms upstairs, subsequently affected other parts of the building.

Those in the neighbourhood were said to have alerted the fire fighters.

Men of the Federal Fire Services and their counterparts from the state fire service responded to the distress call.

Although some rooms and the roof of the building were affected, the firemen were able to curtail the fire from spreading to the ground structure.

Some of the tenants were reported to be wailing while their neighbours consoled them when journalists visited the scene.

The students living in the building were quoted as saying to their neighbours that they did not have a place to sleep as their shelter had been gutted by fire.

One of the firemen at the scene told our correspondent that the cause of the fire could not be immediately determined.

The official said, “We do not know what caused the fire. We have put it out. We will investigate what caused it.”

The Director of Operations, Oyo State Fire Services, Mr Ismail Adeleke, said, “Our men just returned from the scene. They were able to put out the fire.

“Investigation is still ongoing and the cause of the fire will be revealed as investigation progresses.”
