A Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced a Chinese man to two years in prison for tearing up Naira notes.

According to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in a statement on Tuesday, Li Lei Lei was convicted of “mutilating the Nigerian currency” during an altercation with Lagos airport officials while he was trying to leave the country in May.

The anti-graft agency said Li “angrily tore to pieces” N3,200 when Immigration officials at the international airport searched his luggage for drugs.

The EFCC disclosed that Li pleaded guilty to four charges of breaking central bank legislation and the judge sentenced him to six months in prison for each charge, or the option of a N200, 000.
