A 50-year-old Fulani herdsman, Umaru Mohammed, has been remanded in Ilesa Correctional Centre by a Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun State, for allegedly stealing cows.

It was gathered that Mohammed conspired with his colleague identified as Abu Mohammed to commit the act.

Umaru was charged with conspiracy and stealing of four cows at Adedeji Estate in Ikirun on October 9, 2021.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Segun Okeniyi, told the court that Umaru and the other fleeing herder carted away the four cows between 12am and 6am.

Okeniyi informed the court that the stolen cows, valued at N1.1million, belonged to Umaru’s master, Oseni Abdul-Rahman.

It was gathered that Abdul-Rahman asked Umaru to graze the cows but he reportedly disappeared with them. He was later arrested and arraigned in court.

The herder was said to have committed offences contrary to and punishable under sections 516(a) and 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II, Laws of Osun State, 2002.

The accused person, who was not legally represented in court, did not understand the charges read to him in English and Yoruba languages and there was no person to interpret the charges to him in Fulani language.

To this end, Umaru’s plea was not taken.

Chief Magistrate A. A. Adebayo ordered that the defendant be remanded in Ilesa Correctional Centre.

He added that the case be transferred to the Magistrate’s Court in Ikirun for mention on October 26, the adjourned date.
