An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, on Tuesday, ordered a 29-year-old civil servant, Gabriel Awaye, to be remanded in a correctional centre for allegedly defiling a 13-year-old girl.

The police charged Awaye, who lives on Agbawaye Street, Command, Agbado Oke-Odo, Lagos State, with defilement.

Magistrate T.O. Tanimola, who did not take the plea of Awaye, ordered that he should be remanded in Kirikri Correctional Centre.

Tanimola, however, directed the police to send his case file to the state Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.

She adjourned the case till November 12 pending DPP’s advice.

The Prosecution Counsel, Victor Eruada, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on June 2, at his residence, saying that Awaye lured the girl into his apartment and defiled her.

The offence contravened the provisions of Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

News Agency of Nigeria reports that the section prescribes life imprisonment for defilement.
