Court remands four suspected cultists for allegedly terrorizing residents

The Osun State Police Command has arraigned no fewer than four suspected members of a secret cult for allegedly terrorizing members of the public.

The defendants, namely Agbesua Tosin, 24; Abdulazeez Jamiu, 23; Clement Daniel, 25; and Jamiu Abdulmajid, aged 20; were docked at a Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting in Osogbo over allegations of conspiracy, belonging to unlawfully society and disturbing the peace of the residents.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Elisha Olusegun, informed the court that the accused persons committed the offences with others at large around July 3, 2022 in Iree, Boripe Local Government Area of the state.

He said that they belonged to an unlawful society known as Eiye Confraternity, adding that the defendants unleashed terror on the people of Iree.

The charge brought against them read that “Agbesua Tosin, Abdulazeez Jamiu, Clement Daniel, and Jamiu Abdulmajid, and others now at large, on or July 3, 2022 at about 10hours at Iree in Boripe Local Government Area of Osun State in Iree Magisterial District triable in the Osogbo Magisterial District, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit: being members of unlawful society and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Law of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.

“That you, Agbesua Tosin, Abdulazeez Jamiu, Clement Daniel, and Jamiu Abdulmajid, and others now at large, on the same date, time, place and in the aforementioned Magisterial District did engage yourselves in unlawful society known as Eiye Confraternity and unleashed terror in Iree town and its environs and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 64 (a) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun state of Nigeria, 2002.

“You (defendants) did conspire amongst yourselves to commit a misdemeanor and conduct likely to cause breach of peace and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 517 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume Il Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.

“You did conduct yourselves in a manner likely to cause breach of public peace to cause persons in Iree and its environs to fear and or panic and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 249 (d) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.”

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the offences.

Chief Magistrate Olusola Aluko ordered that the case be transferred to the Chief Magistrate’s Court, Iree for mention on August 17.

Aluko remanded the four defendants to the Ilesa Correctional Centre.
