Court remands man for allegedly stealing engine oil, cash

A Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun State, has ordered the remand of a 33-year-old man, Adekola Idowu, for allegedly stealing some quantity of engine oil and the sum of N222, 000.

Idowu, who was arraigned by the police, allegedly committed the offence alongside others at large on July 5, 2022 at Oke-Fia area of Osogbo.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Adeoye Kayode, explained that the defendant stole 10 litres of Ace engine oil valued at N18, 000.

According to the prosecutor, the total value of the stolen item was N240, 000.

The charge against him read that “You, Adekola Idowu and one Abdullahi Isiaka, now at large, on the 5th day of July, 2022, at about 9am at Oke-Fia area, Osogbo in the Osogbo Magisterial District, did conspire to steal 10 litres of ACE Engine Oil valued at N18,000 (Eighteen thousand naira only), property of one Okunola Olaide and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 383 and punishable under Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, CAP 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.

“You, Adekola Idowu, on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned Magisterial district did steal the sum of N222, 000 (Two hundred and twenty-two thousand naira) only property of one Okunola Olaide and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 383 and punishable under Section 390(9) of criminal Code, CAP 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.”

The defendant pleaded not guilty. The defence counsel, T. B. Ayodele, made an oral bail application and promised that Idowu would provide a reliable person as surety.

Magistrate, A. K. Ajala granted the accused person bail in the sum of N500, 000 with one surety in like sum. He said that the surety must be a Grade Level 12 civil servant.

Unable to meet the bail conditions, Idowu was remanded in Ilesa Correctional Centre.
