COVID-19: Benue begins contact tracing of index case

The Benue State Action Committee on COVID-19 said it has begun contact tracing of its index case, Susan Okpe.

Okpe, a 54-year old indigene of Benue who returned from the United Kingdom for her mother’s burial and tested positive for COVID-19, was reported to have had contact with several relations and friends, including politicians.

Briefing newsmen in Makurdi, the state capital, Chairman of the Action Committee on COVID-19 and Deputy Governor of the State, Benson Abounu, said Okpe had contact with the planning committee of her mother’s burial.

He said, “I was told that upon her arrival, she had meetings with the committee planning the burial of her mother before she started complaining about her health after which she was taken to the hospital.

“Some of those being tracked are prominent members of the society while all the staff of the hospital had been isolated and quarantined.”

He also disclosed that the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control had sent a delegation to the state to join hands with the State Action Committee on COVID-19 to ensure that all the protocols outlined by the NCDC are observed.
