..asks senators to wear masks while speaking

Senate President Ahmad Lawan, on Tuesday, expressed his dissatisfaction over the attitude of some of his colleagues to social distancing rules, aimed at containing the spread of COVID-19 in Nigeria.

Lawan, at plenary, also asked senators to always ensure they wear their masks while talking on the floor of the Senate.

He said this while reading President Muhammadu Buhari’s communications on the screening and confirmation of nominees to the upper chamber.

He particularly faulted the Chairman, Senate Committee on Science and Technology, Senator Uche Ekwunife, representing PDP Anambra Central, when he moved too close to the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege of the All Progressives Congress (Delta Central), an action considered to be a flagrant disobedience of the COVID-19 induced social distancing rules.

“Senator Iyom, you are too close to the Deputy Senate President. We must observe social distancing rules. Social distancing is very important. We just have to adhere to it. It will help us. God help us all,” Lawan said.

The Senate president also reminded the senators to wear their masks after Senator Ayo Akinyelure (PDP Ondo Central) spoke on the floor, saying,” We should manage to speak with our masks on.”
