A 30-year-old man, Wasiu Kazeem, has been arraigned before a Magistrate’s Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun State over allegation of reckless driving and for causing the death of a pedestrian named Gabriel Adeeyo.

Kazeem, driver of a commercial Mitsubishi bus with Registration Number RLG 799 XA, was said to have driven dangerously on the highway.

This was said to have resulted in the death of 60-year-old Adeeyo.

The defendant, who was accused of driving on the highway without having a driver’s licence, vehicle insurance and road worthiness, was said to have hit the victim while walking along the road at night.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Jacob Akintunde, said that the defendant committed the offence on February 19, at about 8:30pm at Onward Junction, Osogbo.

However, the accused person pleaded not guilty to the six-count-charge of dangerous driving and manslaughter leveled against him.

Defence counsel, Kehinde Adepoju, prayed the court to admit the defendant to bail on a liberal term, promising that he would provide a reliable surety and would not jump bail if given.

Akintunde, however, opposed the bail application, arguing that the offence involved a loss of life, and that the defendant would evade trial if granted bail.

The presiding Magistrate, O. A. Daramola, ordered the defence counsel to furnish the court with a written bail application.

The magistrate ordered that the defendant be remanded at the Ilesa Correctional Centre and adjourned the matter till April 4, for ruling on his formal bail application.
