Ebonyi election tribunal receives 13 petitions from aggrieved candidates

BY AGNES NWORIE, ABAKALIKI

The Election Petition Tribunal in Ebonyi State has said it has received 13 petitions from various candidates of political parties that contested in the last general elections in the state.

Displeased with the election results as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission for the polls, the candidates filed their petitions and sought redress before the tribunal.

Speaking during an interview in Abakaliki, the Secretary of the Tribunal in the state, Henry Nyior-Sekulla, disclosed that the 13 petitions so far received were from those who contested National Assembly seats.

He said eight petitions were from candidates who contested for the Senate and five from their counterparts who contested for House of Representatives.

According to the Secretary, the tribunal, as of the time of filing this report, had yet to receive any petitions from the Governorship and State House of Assembly candidates.

Nyior-Sekulla further disclosed that the tribunal received three motions ex-parte from the Governorship candidates of the All Progressive Grand Alliance and Peoples Democratic Party, Prof. Benard Odoh and Dr Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, respectively, seeking inspection of electoral documents.

He also said that the Governor-elect, Chief Francis Nwifuru and two other candidates, who contested for state House of Assembly seats, also sought to be allowed to inspect the INEC electoral materials used during the 2023 general elections in the state.

The Point gathered that the three-man panel presiding over the election tribunal in the state, led by Justice A. L. Ogunmoye, had granted the requests of the three governorship candidates as prayed.
