The Nigerian Union of Teachers, Ebonyi State Chapter, while thanking Governor David Umahi on his developmental strides in the state, called on the state government to recruit more teachers to guarantee more effective teaching and learning in public schools.

The Chairman of the NUT, Ebonyi State, Francis Egwu -Elechi, made the call in Abakalki during an interactive session with newsmen on measures to improve the standard of education in the state.

Citing retirement, sack, death and movement for green pastures, as the major things that depleted the population of teachers in the state, he lamented the insufficiency of teachers and recommended their training and retraining on modern trends to make the few available hands more efficient and effective.

In view of the current security situation in the country, he called on the state government to fully reactivate e-learning programmes for both primary and secondary schools.

He said, “The Ebonyi State government introduced radio-television learning programmes for the school children as way of keeping the students abreast with their academic curricular due to the outbreak of the then global ravaging COVID-19 pandemic.”

And noted, that “The radio-television academic teaching programme seemed to have been stopped as all the schools were reopened and the
pandemic getting low with preventive measures already on ground.”

The State NUT Chairman noted that the insecurity problems across the
nation have negatively affected learning in schools, and advised the
government on adopting e-learning system to ensure the safety of
students and pupils.

The Chairman used the occasion to renew the agitation for increase in
percentage of budget allocations for education from both federal and state to improve and maintain standards.

Recall that the Ebonyi State government has not recruited teachers
into the state education sector since 2015.
