Ebonyi varsity student dies while playing football

A second year student of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu Alike Ikwo in Ebonyi State, Ogboji David Chukwuebuka has slumped and died while playing football on campus.

According to Nwankwo Polycarp Chigozie, the Director of Sports, Students Union Government of the university, Ogboji, of the Department of Economics, collapsed recently while “playing for his Faculty in the Freshers’ League Tournament on the school field.”

“He gave up the ghost despite being rushed to the University clinic and then referred to the hospital. He was confirmed dead upon arrival,” Chigozie said in a statement.

“It is with a heavy heart that we bring you the news of the passing of one of our students, Ogboji David Chukwuebuka, a 200 level student from the Economics Department. He collapsed while playing for his faculty in the freshers’ league tournament on the school field.

“Despite being rushed to the clinic and then referred to the hospital, he was confirmed dead upon arrival.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and fellow students during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace. Amen,” the statement read.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the institution,
Iyke Ubochi confirmed the incident and disclosed that the family of the deceased student had come to the University and took his corpse for interment.

Ubochi said the institution is not aware if deceased student had any underlying health conditions that led to his sudden death and prayed for peaceful repose of his soul.

“Unfortunately we commiserate with the family of the deceased student, Ogboji David, a 200 level student of our University. He collapsed recently during SUG organized football competition. So, while playing, he collapsed and was rushed to the school clinic where he was attended to and referred to the Federal Teaching Hospital, but unfortunately, he couldn’t make it.

“The family members were around yesterday (Wednesday) and took possession of his corpse. They didn’t say any thing about having any underlying health conditions which could lead to his sudden death,” the school PRO stated.
