EFCC to arraign Ogun Speaker, Oluomo, today over alleged financial infractions

BY MAYOWA SAMUEL

There were strong indications at the weekend that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission will arraign the embattled Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Olakunle Oluomo, before a Federal High Court in Lagos today over alleged financial crimes.

A source, which pleaded anonymity, told The Point on Sunday that the agency was leaving no stone unturned in its bid to arraign Oluomo.

However, the source added that some political players had been making efforts to stall the arraignment.

He said, “We’re leaving no stone unturned concerning this Oluomo’s matter. He will be arraigned in court in Lagos State on Monday or later in the week, as we’re currently preparing charges against him.

“We’re arranging him in Lagos because it’s a jurisdictional matter. Some highly placed personalities are doing everything to frustrate his arraignment, but he’s expected to explain or defend himself in court on Monday.”

Oluomo was arrested on Thursday morning at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos.

He was released on Friday night.

Confirming his release at the weekend, Oluomo said “I have been given an administrative bail. I will go back to their office on Monday.”

He, however, declined further comment on other issues.

Oluomo was arrested and asked to answer questions bordering on alleged financial misappropriation.

The source at the EFCC had alleged that the commission decided to arrest Oluomo after several invitations from the anti-graft agency.

A source at the Ogun State House Assembly confided in our correspondent that the Speaker’s refusal to honour the EFCC’s invitation was premised on the existing litigation instituted by the Assembly earlier in January this year at the Federal High Court sitting in Abeokuta, against the agency.

Speaking on the development, the Chairman, House Committee on Information, Yussuf Adejojo, said the Speaker’s arrest might have prevented the lawmakers from observing its sitting on Friday.
