The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has vowed to investigate ex-Niger Delta militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, over alleged abuse of the Nigerian currency.

The EFCC, in a terse statement posted across its social media platforms on Monday, hinted at possible prosecution, stating: “Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer.”

The announcement follows public uproar triggered by a viral video showing Tompolo being lavishly sprayed with ₦1,000 notes during his 54th birthday celebration in April.

The footage, originally posted by social media user Harrison A with the caption “EFCC, see Tompolo and the Naira o,” quickly gained traction on X, reigniting accusations of selective enforcement by the anti-corruption agency.

Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007 (as amended) clearly states that “spraying of, dancing or matching on the Naira or any note issued by the bank during social occasions or otherwise howsoever shall constitute an abuse and defacing of the Naira or such note and shall be punishable under the law by fines or imprisonment or both.”

EFCC has repeatedly warned Nigerians that mutilation or spraying of the naira is a punishable offence.

In April 2024, controversial socialite Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, was sentenced to six months in prison for naira abuse.

Just last month, Lagos billionaire Emeka Okonkwo, also known as E-Money, was arrested for allegedly spraying and defacing both naira and US dollars at public events.

It was recently reported how actress Iyabo Ojo and comedian Ayo Makun, were also grilled by the EFCC for similar offences.Nigerian fashion

Ojo confirmed her invitation by the EFCC in a public statement, stating that it was related to the spraying of both Naira and foreign currencies at the wedding.

The actress explained that during her visit to the EFCC office on May 5, 2025, she was questioned about various aspects of her personal and professional life, including her career and businesses.

In an Instagram post, Ojo elaborated on the details of her interaction with the EFCC, clarifying that she had not been arrested but was questioned about the wedding video, where guests, including friends and colleagues, were seen spraying money.

Comedian AY, who also confirmed his EFCC invitation, however, dismissed reports of his arrest.

He said, “If you know that much about EFCC, you can’t be arrested and still have your phone,” he said. “An invitation and visit to the commission do not translate to arrest.”
