Ekweremadu knows fate today in UK as trial resumes

BY MAYOWA SAMUEL

Hearing at the Central Criminal Court, otherwise called The Old Bailey, will continue today as former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, his wife, Beatrice and daughter, Sonia, will know if they’ll stand trial in the alleged conspiracy charges of organ harvesting brought against them.

The possibility of the lawmaker from Enugu State being granted bail and returning to Nigeria with his family is on the cards.

He has been under arrest almost six months now and for him to be kept beyond December 22, 2022, according to extant laws, the Prosecution would have to apply to the court for permission.

The Ekweremadus and one Obinna Ogbeta are alleged to have conspired for the procurement of one of the kidneys of David Nwamini. It was while at a hospital for a series of tests in June that Nwamini ‘raised the alarm’ and told authorities he was brought to the country from Nigeria for the purposes of harvesting his organ for ailing Sonia.

While Ekweremadu has been in custody since their arrest on June 23, his wife was granted bail, but made to report three times a week to a local Police Station.
