Fear grips Osogbo residents over killings by unknown gunmen

Residents of Osogbo, the capital of Osun State have been living in fear following reported killings at different locations in the town by unknown assailants.
Between last Sunday night and monday morning, no fewer than three persons were murdered by yet to be apprehended gun-wielding men.
While some of the residents said that the murders were carried out by cult members, others claimed they were politically-motivated killings.
At about 7:30am last Monday, residents of Technical College area, along Oke Fia Road in Osogbo woke up to discover a lifeless body of a man by the roadside. The unidentified man, residents said, was murdered overnight and his body dumped on the road.
Some residents had notified policemen of the corpse before some security operatives stormed the area in a van and evacuated the dead body to a mortuary.
While the residents of Technical College had yet to recover from the shocking discovery, a man said to be a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, an opposition party in the state, was murdered at a local drinking joint.
The victim, simply identified as Shina Alake, was said to have been shot in the head by his assailants about two hours after the lifeless body of the man at Oke Fia Road was discovered.
Shina, popularly known as China, was said to have been invited on the phone by two friends to join them at a local joint, Palace Cool Spot, located at Olatunji Ajayi Street, Oke Onitea area of Osogbo, which is a stone throw to his house.
It was gathered that Shina had obliged his callers and had gone out to meet them at the joint on Monday morning, not knowing that he would not return home.
According to the victim’s younger brother, a final year student of the Osun State University, Osogbo, his elder brother had met with his friends and they had approached the owner of the joint who gave him the key to the joint.
He said Shina opened the joint and requested the woman, who owns the joint, to serve him and his friends bottles of beer.
The final year student, who said he missed his last examination on Monday owing to the murder of his elder brother, disclosed that Shina was shot in less than an hour after he started drinking with his friends.
