The Federal Government reportedly met with the Academic Staff Union of Universities today, (Monday).
The meeting, scheduled to commence by 5pm, had in attendance representatives of the Federal Government led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, and that of ASUU.
The Director of Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Patience Onuobia, in a notice of meeting sent to journalists, on Monday, said that Ngige would chair the meeting.
The notice read that “The Minister for Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, will be meeting with the Academic Staff Union of Universities today by 5 pm.”
The strike by ASUU entered the 56th day on Monday.
Recall that ASUU announced a four-week-warning-strike following the failure of the union and the Federal Government to reach a common ground on the demands of the lecturers.
Among their demands are the release of revitalization funds for universities, renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, release of earned allowances for university lecturers, and deployment of the UTAS payment platform for the payment of salaries and allowances of university lecturers.
At the expiration of the initial four weeks warning strike, the union declared another eight weeks as the Federal Government failed to accede to its demands.
