The Federal Government has taken a decisive step toward blockchain integration by engaging 21 Nigerian researchers to help shape its National Blockchain Policy, as revealed in a newly released whitepaper by the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy.
The whitepaper, outlines the ministry’s vision to position Nigeria at the forefront of blockchain technology, citing its potential to revolutionize areas such as financial inclusion, digital identity, and supply chain transparency.
“The national policy is required because blockchain technology could drive significant advances in several areas like financial inclusion, supply chain transparency and digital identity,” the whitepaper stated.
The document noted that out of 42 global blockchain researchers identified, 21 were confirmed to be Nigerians, based on names, affiliations, and contextual information.
Those listed include: Abiola Salau, Abraham Ayegba Alfa, Ahmad Sani Bello, Augustine Ikpehai, Buhari Ugbede Umar, Chinwe Ifejika Speranza, Chuka Oham, Emmanuel Abidemi Adeniyi, Eustace Manayi Dogo, Femi Emmanuel Ayo, and Ishaya Gambo.
Others are Isioma Maureen Chiluwa, Ismail Adelopo, Jacob Abegunde, Joseph Bamidele Awotunde, Jumoke Popoola, Odunayo Olowookere, Olayemi Mikail Olaniyi, Olusogo Popoola, Roseline Oluwaseun Ogundokun, and Timilehin Ogundare.
The Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, in a separate statement, emphasized that the new blockchain policy framework is designed to be inclusive and forward-looking.
“The inclusive approach ensures that Nigeria’s Blockchain policy is not only technically sound, but also locally relevant, with broad-based support that reflects the realities and aspirations of our nation,” he said.
He further added, “Through this collaborative process, we aim to facilitate comprehensive policy development, promote public trust and awareness, and spark innovation that leads to real-world solutions.”
The project lays the foundation for a digitally empowered economy by demonstrating the government’s dedication to leveraging local knowledge for tech-driven growth and regulatory advancement.
