The Federal Government has warned federal marriage registrars to desist from acts of indiscipline and misconducts or be ready to face disciplinary action.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Dr Shuaib Belgore, gave the advice during an on-the-spot assessment visit to the Jos Federal Marriage Registry.

A statement made available by the Director of Press, Ministry of Interior, Mrs Blessing Lere-Adams, said that the warning was against the backdrop of a recent act of negligence of duties at the Benin Federal Marriage Registry.

Belgore was quoted in the statement as saying that “Anybody caught engaging in corruption, absence from duty post, negligence to duties and such likes, will be made to face serious disciplinary actions.

“You have to do your work. If you do well, you will be handsomely rewarded,” the statement read.

It assured the Jos registry of Federal Government’s support.

The Registrar in charge of the Jos Registry, Dawam Barbara, lauded Belgore and his team for the visit and promised the commitment of officers to discharging their statutory duties effectively and efficiently.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that on June 4, the Federal Government instituted disciplinary action against Mr Ozuruonye Chukuma, the Registrar of the Federal Marriage Registry, Benin for negligence and absence from duty.

The offence, the ministry said, constituted acts unbecoming of a public officer in contravention of extant Public Service Rules.

NAN reports that Belgore said the decision was in line with the ethics of the Civil Service which encouraged diligence and discipline in public officers.

The Permanent Secretary ordered investigation into the incident adding that Chukuma be relieved of his duties as a Marriage Registrar at the Benin Federal Marriage Registry.

Chukwuma was, therefore, recalled to the headquarters in Abuja pending the conclusion of the investigation.
