Fight against corruption should be holistic – Governor Udom

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Emmanuel Udom, has said that the war against corruption embarked upon by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration would only be fruitful if all Nigerians got involved in the crusade.
Governor Udom said that the governors and other people in high places should not be the only focus of the anti-corruption agencies.
The governor, who stated this while attending the Sunday worship service of the Deeper Life Bible Church at Ayobo in Lagos, observed that the war against corruption must start with every individual in the country.
He added that junior workers in both public and private organisations equally exhibited corrupt tendencies.
Udom said, “Until we all imbibe the culture of anti-corruption, we may not go far in the crusade against corruption. The fight must be holistic and it must start with individual families for it to be effective. Unknown to many people, the secretaries and drivers in both public and private organisations are corrupt because they get involved in sharp practices as well.
“As it is, attention is focused on governors and people in Abuja but I think the fight against corruption should be holistic and everybody should be part of it. People don’t know that telling lies is corruption because anybody who tells lies can do anything.”
The Akwa Ibom governor also maintained that this was the appropriate time for the diversification of the Nigerian economy, stressing that over-dependence on oil had brought the country to the situation it had found itself today.
He, however, expressed hope that Nigeria would overcome the prevailing economic situation.
“Our focus in Akwa Ibom is agriculture and we are going to invest in it heavily because God has deposited so much resources in the land, as there is no developed nation in the world that cannot feed itself and I believe Nigeria’s case will not be an exception.
“We encourage our people to embrace farming because we have arable land that can take on a wide of range local and mechanized plantation, with the assistance of the state government”, Udom added.
The governor reiterated his confidence in God to transform the country, calling on Nigerians not to lose hope in the leadership at this point in time. “We are moving forward and we have hope in God that our country will get better. We should not compare ourselves with other developed nations whose democracies have developed,” Udom said.
