Fortunate Hands Foundation takes 10 Ajegunle children to school

Non-Governmental Organisation, Fortunate Hands Foundation, Nigeria, has pledged to sponsor ten children from Dustbin Village, Ajegunle, Lagos, through the basic education level.

According to the Founder of the NGO, Miss Oluwatola Assan, the organisation discovered during its last tour of the community that most Ajegunle children were out of school and then decided to take up the project.

She said, “We had a project back in December 2017 titled, “Merry Christmas,” which was held in Dustbin Village, Ajegunle. During the event, we provided food, played games, danced and left them with gifts. In addition, we felt the need to leave an impact. So, right there and then, we decided to sponsor kids who weren’t enrolled in school and that’s why we are able to do this today.

“We recognised how content the kids were, even with the standard of living they had and that to us was a sign that they would do great if they got the opportunity. That opportunity is what we offer them today-education.”

Assan noted that her NGO took up the project to help those who needed education but couldn’t afford it, adding that the Foundation would do more in helping the needy.

She said, “We believe that every child deserves an education or at least a skill set. Hence, we focus on areas where we see talent but also inability to afford this education or skill set to sharpen those talents.

“When we discovered Dustbin village, we felt the isolation, we saw the way of life, we saw the need and we as an organisation are here to help those who really need, it but cannot afford it.

“As we continue to discover isolated areas filled with less privileged people, we expect to spread some more love this Christmas in a place still to be determined. We sure will again meet our goal of leaving an impact in such place by selecting more recipients to send to school in the following year.”

The Project Coordinator, Miss Eloviano Afakpe, told our correspondent that it was hard to select the children to benefit in order not to be accused of being sentimental.

She said 10 beneficiaries were eventually selected.

“The children were not enlightened and getting facts and answers to my questions from the wardens/parents of this kids was difficult. Children selection process wasn’t easy, as we didn’t want to be sentimental, but giving it to only children who need it the most,” she said.

The children were registered at the Ebenezer Primary School near their community, to begin their basic education. Eight of them are to begin from Nursery 2 while two others would start from primary
two.

The children include Modupeola Taiwo, Simbiat Hassan, Oluwafemi Adekeye, Hassan Sharafadeen, Basit Kehinde, Rofia Kehinde, Sarah Ishola, Aliyat Dairo, Oluwadarasimi Ishola and Aliyat Afeez.

The coordinator revealed that the NGO would sponsor their basic education with the necessary materials to commpletion.

Assan added that more children from the area would benefit from the project next year.

“As we continue to discover isolated areas filled with less privileged people, we expect to spread some more love this Christmas in a place still to be determined. We sure will again meet our goal of leaving an impact in such a place by selecting more recipients to send to school in the following year. By so doing, we will be sticking to the vision of the Fortunate Hands Foundation in accordance with Galatians 6 vs 2, ‘Carry each other’s burden and in this way you will fulfil the law of Christ,’” she said.
