Following the sudden rise in the price of fuel across the country and the scarcity of the commodity, many Nigerians have been stranded.

While others who could not afford the exorbitant transport fares being charged by few transporters plying roads take to trekking to get to their different destinations, others had to cancel their outings after waiting endlessly for commercial vehicles.

Motorists have also abandoned their vehicles because of the scarcity of petrol, and the high cost of fuel as many roads, which used to be busy, have become desolated.

The Point gathered that many commercial transporters parked their vehicles after fruitless efforts to get fuel.

Many filling stations monitored by our correspondents on Tuesday were shut down while few others were crowded by people seeking to purchase petrol at inflated prices.

Further checks by our correspondents nationwide revealed that commuters were trekking long distances due to the scarcity of vehicles and commercial motorcycles in many parts of the country.

The situation also affected students and pupils as they were spotted trekking from their schools to their various homes owing to unavailability of buses.

At some of the petrol stations visited on Tuesday morning, fuel was sold above N750 per litre.

The fuel scarcity has necessitated extreme black market prices, with a litre of fuel sold as high as N2000 in some states.

A Nigerian, Ayodele Bunmi said, “The situation of things in this country has got out of hands. We are really suffering. Imagine me trekking from Oja-Oba to OSBC area because I couldn’t find any vehicle.

“I want to beg government to do something before it is too late.”

Besides, some traders could not make it to their various shops on Tuesday due to lack of public transportation.

Many shops sighted by The Point were under lock and key even as business was at low ebb in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State.
