Panic spread on Tuesday evening following a gas explosion that occurred behind the Alake Sports Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State — the venue currently hosting the handball event of the ongoing sports games.
Eyewitnesses reported a loud blast that shook the area and caused confusion among residents and participants at the sports facility.
The explosion was said to have taken place at a gas refilling point located behind the centre.
Emergency responders were seen arriving at the scene to assess the situation and begin preliminary containment efforts. The extent of damage or possible casualties has yet to be confirmed.
Authorities have cordoned off the area, and further updates are expected as the situation develops.
Meanwhile, calm has gradually returned to the venue. The fire, which was triggered by a gas truck supplying fuel to the generator, was later extinguished.
Security operatives and emergency responders swiftly took control of the situation, ensuring the safety of athletes, officials, and spectators.
No injuries or casualties have been officially reported.
