A lecturer in Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, Dr Osita Chinedu has been shot dead by gunmen.

The Point gathered that the don was attacked on Monday evening before he was killed on the spot.

Eyewitnesses’ accounts revealed that some persons suspected to be members of a car snatching syndicate had waylaid Chinedu who was driving his car home around the High Tension area in Aroma community of the state capital.

Sources said the gunmen struggled with the lecturer and ordered him to surrender his car keys before he was finally shot.

It was, however, not ascertained if the men made a way with Chinedu’s car after shooting him, but it was gathered that the victim died on the spot at around 7pm.

A staff of the university who alerted other colleagues on the development said, “Yes someone was shot dead along that High Tension this evening. They are saying that he is a lecturer from UNIZIK, from Nteje.

“Please, Comrades, let us be safe during this yuletide. If they come for your car, surrender the car, our lives are important.”

Reacting on the condition of anonymity, another staff of UNIZIK said, “A colleague and fellow sports enthusiast shot dead yesterday night. This is no longer funny.”

“We and our children are no longer safe in this state. A whole capital city,” the visibly furious lecturer said.

As of the time of filing this report, the Anambra State Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga was yet to react to the incident.

Meanwhile, some students who were taught by the deceased lecturer have been mourning his gruesome murder.

One of them, Oge Okoye, said the deceased was teaching at the Department of Guidance and Counselling of the university, adding that the citadel of learning has been thrown into mourning.
