Heavy security as Kano Shari’a Court rules on blasphemy case today

Heavy security has been reported around the Kofar Nassarawa area along the Emir’s palace in Kano as an Upper Shari’a Court is set to deliver judgment today in an alleged case of blasphemy brought against a controversial cleric, Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara.

This is coming almost 15 months into the trial of the Kano-based Islamic cleric before the court sitting at Kofar Kudu and presided over by Justice Ibrahim Sarki Yola.

Kabara, charged in July, 2021, by the state government, is standing trial on the issue bordering on alleged blasphemous statements against the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), an act capable of causing a breach of public peace.

Reports from the ancient city indicated that security operatives have been heavily deployed in the area around the palace of the Emir of Kano, where the court is situated.

Journalists, civil rights activists and legal practitioners were also said to be on the ground as at the time of this report, according to a source in the state.
