Fresh details have emerged over the jungle justice carried out on a final year student of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife on Monday.

The Point gathered that the victim’s name is Okoli Arinze of the Department of Civil Engineering.

Arinze, an indigene of Anambra State was said to have had an extra year.

On Monday, he was accused of stealing a mobile phone belonging to a fellow student at the Awo Hall, one of the male hostels on campus and paraded round the hall of residence while being brutally beaten in turn by some aggrieved students.

The mob action, it was gathered, was led by the executives of the Awo Hall on Monday night.

After the parade and beating which is being called by the students as “maximum shi-shi”, a sort of jungle punishment meted out on students suspected to have committed an offence on campus, Arinze was allegedly handed over to the Student Union’s security committee at about 11:00pm.

Sources said that Arinze was dragged to the SUG building on campus and subjected to brutal torture overnight.

On Tuesday, the final year student was rushed to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital after he lost consciousness.

Witnesses claimed that the deceased was already dead before being taken to the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit on Tuesday.

However, the management of the institution disclosed that the matter had been reported to the police and promised that it would be investigated.

The management condemned the mob action and warned students to desist from taking laws into their hands.
