How to reduce youth unemployment, by Yabatech rector

Rector of the Yaba College of Technology, Mr. Obafemi Omokungbe, has said that the high rate of unemployment and inequalities in the society can only be reduced if the Nigerian youths embrace the spirit of entrepreneurship.

He stated this at the 2019 World Youth Skills Day organised by Yabatech UNEVOC Center, recently.

Omokungbe, who was represented by the Deputy Rector, Administration, Dr. Titilayo Ukabam, upheld the theme of the event, “Innovative Digital Literacy and Entrepreneurial Skills and Development,” stressing the need for students and youths to delve into building entrepreneurial skills as the world evolves.

He said that the unlimited energy and potential of the youth to become successful in all fields of life must be channeled towards possessing skills to solve crucial issues faced by societies across the world.

Members of the Local Organising Committee headed by Dr. Ifeoma Akeredolu also put together an inter-school debate among the secondary schools around the college axis on the topic: “Innovative Digital Literacy and Entrepreneurial Skills Have Led to Success in the 21st Century.”

The climax of the event was the panel session on the theme of the event in which they were able to deduce the benefits of entrepreneurial skills among the youths of today, stating that white collar jobs should be a plan ‘B’ if entrepreneurial skill fails.

The event also featured the pitching of business plans by some shortlisted candidates who are student’s entrepreneurs, and fantastic prices were won courtesy of the organisers and SLOT system.
