Inside Magodo: MRA ‘outlaws’ commercial activities

  • Forbids use of property for business

The Magodo Residents Association has made bold attempts to stop the increasing rate of commercial activities in the estate. At the entrance to almost all the streets in the estate, a large banner welcomes you with a warning, “Please do not let, buy or convert property in this estate for commercial purposes. You will not be allowed”.
The Chairman of MRA, Mr. Kunle Eludire, told our correspondent that the residents had a commercial policy governing the estate.
Eludire said, “The estate is supposed to be residential property, but people are now converting it. By this move, we want to notify the prospective tenants that commercial activities are not allowed in Magodo”.
He stressed that the policy would not stop anyone from acquiring a property, but it must not be used for commercial purposes.
“Anything short of residential is not allowed because it is over riding the peaceful ambience of the estate”, the MRA chairman added.
Similarly, the immediate past chairman of MRA, Kunle Fashogbon, insisted that the residents needed government assistance to keep the sanctity of the estate because it was purely designed as a residential neighbourhood.
According to Fashogbon, If you drive around in the evening, you will realise that the peace of the estate is going gradually.
“If nothing is done in the next few years, we would likely lose the peace. I understand that the population of the country is increasing, but the rate at which commercial activities are coming in is alarming. Residential houses are being converted and it is certainly not a good omen. It should be controlled, but unfortunately the association has no power to do anything.
“There was a time we came out with a bylaw. Inasmuch as we agreed that when the population increases there must be other things in the estate, government needs to assist us to manage it. We’ve not been getting their support and it is not good.”
