Invest in school sports for all-round devt – Stakeholders

The Executive Director, Cayley College, Agidingbi, Lagos, Mrs. Mary Iyayi, has urged governments at all levels to invest more in schools’ sports for all round development.

This, Iyayi said, was necessary for the physical, mental and emotional development of the students.

She spoke at the inter-house sports competition of the school held recently at Agege Stadium.

According to her, the school is interested in building a total child for a challenging future and has come to realise that to achieve this, sports should not be relegated.

“It gives them the chance to build good sportsmanship, so in Cayley, we are preparing them for a future that they can easily blend and definitely, sports should be considered,” she said.

She added that the school made adequate preparations for the sporting competition involving relay race, 100 metre race, match past and other activities.

The Chairman of the occasion, Dirisu Amero, who was represented by Pastor Olawale Bello, said sports remained a unifying force all over the world regardless of race and religion.

Amero, who is the Chief Executive Officer of De Meros Group, stressed the need for stakeholders to position education for all-round development of the child.

He said, “The curriculum should create avenue for students to develop themselves even in sports.”

He reasoned that the country would make remarkable progress in sports if concerned agencies could scout for talents at sporting events like inter house sports competitions.

Amero urged the state government to partner with schools to encourage sporting competition, adding that the students should also pay required attention to education.

“There is no substitute to hard work or shortcut to success, therefore, be diligent in your academics and this will lead to success in whatever you do,” he said.

Green House (Darwin) came first in the competition with 14 gold, 12 silver and 7 bronze. Purple House (Cayley) came second while Red House (Galileo) came third in the sporting competition.
