A judge of the Kano Upper Shariah Court, Ibrahim Sarki Yola, has filed a case against a lawyer, Hashim Huseini Hashim, for allegedly defaming his (Yola’s) person.

The case was filed against the Kano-based legal practitioner before a Shariah Court sitting at Filling Hockey, Zoo Road, Kano.

The state prosecution counsel, Lamido Soron Dinki, stated that the defendant, in a viral video circulated through his social media handle, accused the judge of being unfair, biased and unfaithful to his religious and judicial callings.

Dinki accused Hashim of blasphemy, alleging that the defendant made slanderous and blasphemous utterances in the video, aimed at dishonouring the person of the judge.

Hashim, through his counsel, A. A. Sani, dismissed the allegations against him, contending that the prosecution had initially arraigned Hashim before a Kano Chief Magistrate’s Court on the same allegations but failed to prove its case against him.

He said that in the initial criminal matter against his client, the prosecution failed to produce witnesses, but opted to file fresh charges against him before the Shariah Court.
The defence counsel prayed the court to admit the defendant to bail in liberal terms.

The trial judge, Sheik Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara, denied Hashim bail and ordered that the lawyer be remanded at the Kano Correctional Centre.
He adjourned the matter till January 15, 2022 for hearing.
