An Upper Area Court in Gwagwalada, FCT, on Thursday sentenced a labourer, Nuru Adamu, to 15 months imprisonment for stabbing a woman.

The Prosecution Counsel, Abudullahi Tanko, told the court that the complainant, Blessing Ivo, of Angwan Tiv Gwagwalada, FCT, reported the matter at the police station on April 25.

Tanko said the convict stole the complainant’s Itel phone valued N30,000 and a cash sum of N4,500 and, in the process, stabbed her in four different places.

The prosecutor, who claimed that the complainant was taken to the Rosa Haskey Hospital where she spent the sum of N297,000 for treatment.

The Judge, Mr Sani Umar, sentenced Adamu, who pleaded guilty on four counts of criminal conspiracy, trespass, causing grievous hurt and theft.

Umar, however, gave the convict an option to pay N20,000 fine for the criminal conspiracy or serve three months imprisonment in default; a fine of N30,000 for criminal trespass or three months imprisonment.

He also ordered the convict to pay N50,000 or in default, serve a jail term of five months and a fine of N40,000 for the offence of theft.

The judge also awarded N270,000 in damages to the victim.

The option of fine was premised on the fact that he was a first-time offender who showed remorse and pleaded for leniency.

The judge expressed the hope that Adamu’s sentence would serve as a deterrent to others.
