Lagos taskforce arrests 83 squatters on rail track

Officials of the Lagos State Special Task Force on Environmental Offences arrested 83 squatters on the Red Line rail corridor in the early hours of Friday.

The state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this on his X handle on Friday.

He wrote, “While patrolling the area in the early hours of today, the Special Task Force on Environmental Offences again arrested 83 illegal squatters on the Red Line corridor of Oshodi – Pen Cinema – Iju Fagba area.

“This enforcement operation will be sustained till Lagos is rid of illegal squatters on our railway lines, pedestrian bridges, and under bridges across the state.”

Wahab had also revealed a similar operation on Thursday where he said 110 persons were arrested in an overnight operation led by CSP Shola Jejeloye to clean up and secure the Redline rail track around the Pen Cinema – Iju Fagba corridor.

He added that the arrested persons will be charged to court..

According to the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, the Red Line rail infrastructure is to be launched by President Bola Tinubu on February 29, 2024.

During an inspection on February 18, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had issued a warning to those selling on the tracks or living there to vacate the Red Line corridor immediately.
