A 29-year-old man, Sola Emorua, was on Thursday sentenced to death by hanging by an Osun State High Court in Ilesa, for armed robbery.

He was prosecuted on two counts of armed robbery and conspiracy, having being arraigned on January 29, 2018.

The prosecutor from the State Ministry of Justice, Motolani Sokefun, said his offences were contrary to Section 6(b) and 2 (a), (b) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act CAP R.11, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

Emorua pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge preferred against him.

Sokefun told the court that the accused person commited the offence on the 7th day of May, 2015 at about 5:30pm at Ayorunto Area, Ilesha/Akure Expressway, Osu area.

He explained that Emorua and others at large, armed with dangerous weapons like guns and cutlasses, had robbed one Ismaila Azeez of his tanker with Registration number: XV 298 APP, loaded with 33,000 litres of Kerosene.

The prosecutor said the victim was able to identify Emorua as part of the gang that robbed him and testified in the court during the trial.

Prosecutor called three witnesses and tendered several exhibits including Emorua’s confessional statement, circumstantial evidence and evidence of eyewitness to the crime.

Emorua’s lawyer, Kehinde Aworele, told the court that his client had denied the confessional statement tendered by the prosecutor.

In his Judgement, Justice Isiaka Adeleke, found Emorua guilty on the two-count charge and sentenced him to death by hanging.
