A Magistrate’s Court sitting in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, has sentenced a 28-year-old man, Sampson Nwankwo, to six-month-jail-term for stealing four pairs of jean trousers in a supermarket.

The dresses said to have been stolen on May 6, 2019, at Anna World Fashion shop, 25, Water Works Road, Abakaliki, were valued at N12, 000.

The Point gathered that Nwankwo entered the supermarket under the pretence that he came for shopping. He was said to have worn four jean trousers on his own pants and attempted to bolt away.
However, he was caught while attempting to leave the shop without making payment for the items.

The suspect was allegedly monitored through the Closed-Circuit Television camera in the shop.

He was arrested and handed over to the security men but reportedly escaped while being whisked away to the police station.

Luck however ran out on him when he returned to town years later to celebrate the last Christmas as he was arrested by the police when sighted in town.

He was charged to court on one-count-charge of stealing. He pleaded guilty as charged and confessed to have had his way on two different occasions in the supermarket.

In an interview, Nwankwo disclosed that he sold the stolen wares to some unsuspecting buyers at the popular Margret Umahi International Market in Abakaliki.

The trial magistrate, Blessing Ibeabuchi-Chukwu, sentenced Nwankwo to six-month-jail-term with an option of N10, 000 fines.
