Man faces trial for allegedly destroying economic trees

A 45-year-old man, Wakili Aderogbin, has been arraigned before an Osogbo Magistrate’s Court for allegedly destroying some economic trees on farmland in Ikire, Osun State.

The Police accused Aderogbin of forcefully entering the farmland that belongs to one Hammed Abass and willfully destroyed coconut and mango trees among other economic trees.

It was gathered that there had been a protracted land tussle among the natives of the community.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Adeoye Kayode, informed the court that the defendant conspired with others at large to commit the offence on August 25, 2021 at Wakajaye Ologbin village via Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area of the state.

The prosecutor said that the value of the alleged damaged economic trees was not yet known, adding that Aderogbin committed offences contrary to and punishable under sections 517, 81 and 451 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II, Laws of Osun State, 2002.

The accused person pleaded not guilty to the three counts of forceful entry, conspiracy and malicious damage leveled against him.

Defence counsel, Tunbosun Oladipupo, applied for bail for the defendant, assuring the court of his client’s readiness to stand trial.

Magistrate A. A. Adebayo admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N500, 000 with a surety in like amount.

The surety, who must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction, is required to swear an affidavit of means.

The case was adjourned till April 11 for mention.
